This walk explores Middle Dovedale, the area between Rocester and Mayfield.
Meet at 10.15 for a 10.30 start on the B5033 near the bridge over the River Dove
between Lower Ellastone and Norbury, there should be ample roadside parking
(GR SK119424). The walk is about 19 km but only with 300 m of height gained.
There is the option to shorten the route to 14 or 16km depending on conditions
and enthusiasm.
The route follows the Dove Valley past Calwich Abbey to Church Mayfield where
we cross the river to Clifton. We will then climb up, going above Snelston Hall to
cross the B5033 near Roston Common. At this stage anyone wanting a shorter
walk can return to the start by 2km of road walking. Those continuing will pass
through parts of Roston, then descend again to the Dove Valley near Rocester. At
Rocester we will pick up the Limestone Way at its start and follow it back to
Ellastone. Please bring a packed lunch. Please let us know you are coming.
