Heathy Lea

Heathy Lea is in the Peak District on the Chatsworth Estate just outside Baslow, (see bottom of the page for map) making it well placed for rock climbing, walking and mountain biking. The Derbyshire gritstone edges of Birchen, Chatsworth and Gardom’s edges are within walking distance. Other gritstone edges and limestone climbing areas are all a short drive away. The Robin Hood and Wheatsheaf pubs, plus the cafés and restaurants of Baslow are all within easy walking distance.     

Accommodation

Heathy Lea consists of a cottage, adjacent to the old pump house, and a barn.  You can hire just the Cottage, or the Cottage and Barn together.  The Cottage sleeps a total of 12 people, 6 in each of two bedrooms, the Barn sleeps a further 8 people. No animals are allowed in the cottage or the barn.

Downstairs

In the kitchen, there is an electric cooker with hob, 2 ovens and grill, a toaster, electric kettle and microwave, plus all the necessary cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery and tea towels. In the lounge there is a sofa and chairs, a small dining table, a solid fuel burning stove with coal provided, electric storage heater and small climbing book library. There is a small washroom/toilet (1 wash basin) with a fan heater, hot water and shower. The porch contains a fridge and shelves for food storage, and hanging space for wet gear. There is an additional outside toilet near the porch in a separate building.

Upstairs

The cottage has two bedrooms, each sleeping 6 persons in 3 sets of bunk beds with comfortable covered foam mattresses, pillows are provided, sleeping bags are required. The bedrooms are heated by electric storage heaters.

The Barn

The barn is intended as an overflow to the cottage, and therefore only offers basic facilities. It has a single sleeping loft area for eight persons, approached via a ladder. Some mattresses are provided. Outside the Barn is an area suitable for bonfires and barbecues.

Parking

There is parking space for a maximum of 12 vehicles around the hut, any parking must not obstruct the trackways.

Do not bring any vehicle with an unladen weight exceeding 2 tons to the premises without first obtaining permission from the Hut Custodian / Hut Booking Secretary (this is an important element of the lease)

Location

The hut is accessed from the A619 between Chesterfield and Baslow, about 1 mile from Baslow. Grid Reference is SK272721. It is marked as Saw Mill on the OS 1:25,000 map. Approaching from Baslow turn right on a small unmarked track, just before the Armco barrier starts (see photo below). The hut is about 100 metres down this track, over a bridge. If approaching from Chesterfield you are advised to continue past the hut to the roundabout outside Baslow, encircle this and approach uphill as above.
