Membership Guidance

Fees

Before filling in the membership form both Full and Provisional membership applicants need to complete a GoCardless direct debit mandate through the link on the membership application page. Initial fees will be taken once membership is approved.

For any problems with filling in the mandate please email: treasurer@oread.co.uk

Fees are paid for a calendar year. There can be a discount for new members joining later in the year.

Application for Provisional membership

In most cases applicants for Provisional Membership will have met members of the club, either on a day or evening meet, or at a climbing wall before applying, however you can apply before meeting any members of the club. On the application form give a brief outline of any past experience, and maybe what you hope to do with the club. Provisional members are normally expected to become known to members of the club, attend meets and get involved in club activities in the first year and to apply for Full Membership after about a year.

Provisional members do not need a named proposer and seconder, so this section can be left blank.

The section of meets attended is optional.

You will usually hear the outcome of your Provisional Membership application shortly after submitting your application form.

Application for Full Membership

In many cases an applicant for full membership will already have been a provisional member for about a year before applying for full membership. In that time it is hoped that they have been on meets and got to know members of the club. However some people who are already known to the club, possibly partners or adult family members of full members, can apply directly for full membership. As a full membership applicant you will need to write a bit about your experience of climbing, walking or mountaineering. We do not require specific standards but you need to show awareness of your capabilities and maybe some idea of future aspirations.

Full member applicants need a proposer and seconder for the application form. These will have been full members for at least 1 year, and will have been on meets with you and seen you taking part in club activities. They are expected to confirm that you meet the membership requirements. Please have their full names ready before you fill in the application form, their names will then be selected from the drop down list on the application form

The section on meets attended is useful but not essential.

Once your application form has been submitted your proposer and seconder will be asked to give a statement of support for your application. This then goes to the committee, and provided they agree that the application can proceed a note is published in the next newsletter inviting any comments from other members on your desire to join the club (if any these are usually supportive). Finally the committee will approve (or in exceptional cases decline) your membership application. This process usually takes 2 to 3 months, so don’t expect to hear an immediate outcome.
