  • Ten Ways To Succeed on a Trad Route by Hazel Findlay
thumb Success in climbing can be hard to quantify. It can be difficult to ascertain exactly why you managed to get up that last hard route. What can be easier to pinpoint is why you fell off.

In this article, Hazel Findlay, one of Britain's top climbers, takes an upside down look at succeeding on trad routes - with her top ten reasons for failure.

Welcome to the website of the Oread Mountaineering Club, the friendliest and the most active outdoor club in the Derby area!

Based in the Peak District, the OMC is one of the longest established clubs in Derbyshire and its history of success can be put down to its buoyant culture of enthusiasm and activity.

Today we have around 180 members who participate at all levels in mountaineering, climbing and walking as well as loads of social events. All new members are welcome.

There’s a climbing meet every Wednesday – on grit or limestone in summer and on a climbing wall in winter.  We have groups at Wirksworth, Nottingham, Derby and a Sheffield climbing wall most Wednesdays. These  generally end up in the pub for a well-deserved beer afterwards.

During the winter on a Tuesday, there are regular slide nights and talks  (at the Royal Oak, Ockbrook) where you get the chance to meet up with other members  (and perhaps make arrangements for a trip to Scotland at the weekend if the conditions are in).

Members also frequently text or mail around spontaneously at any time of year to get together on other evenings or at weekends - offering great opportunities to get out climbing regularly .

Of course there are also numerous meets at weekends in locations all over the UK, both summer and winter, and an Alpine meet every year during the summer. As well as the  mountain areas in North Wales, The Lake District and Scotland, we often  have coastal meets to take in the delights of sea cliffs in such places as Cornwall and Pembrokeshire.

The Oread Mountaineering Club has two huts as well. Fancy a weekend climbing in Wales? Our climbing hut is in the back garden of Snowdon, and offers very comfortable accommodation for a few pounds a night to all members. The other hut is right in the heart of the Peak District on the Chatsworth Estate, walking distance from Gardom’s, Birchen and Chatsworth Edges.

And, as if that weren’t enough, there are also many opportunities to get together with other members for a ‘hot rock’ week in Spain, Kalymnos, Croatia, France.

Join the Oread Mountaineering Club, meet new friends, find new partners, get active regularly and have fun!  You will find details of forthcoming meets on the Meets List page. Come and meet us on one of the local meets.

We look forward to meeting you!

  • Kenton prepares for Everest summit: wish him luck!
It's been one of the toughest seasons on Everest in recent decades. Dry conditions have raised the danger of rock fall and the route through the Khumbu Icefall has been unusually difficult. Despite several teams pulling out, Kenton Cool is at base camp preparing to make his record-breaking tenth Everest summit bid – and fulfill the Olympic pledge made by the 1922 Everest team 88 years ago.
  • BMC Facebook page ticks Everest
We’re out of breath. We’ve just succeeded in our quest to get 8,848 Facebook likes before Kenton Cool climbs Everest. But we think we can climb higher: can you help us reach 10,000 and raise money for Porter’s Progress?
