thumb In this article Stuart34 gives his account of a fun, but slightly cold-footed trip to the Bugaboos in Canada. His novel approach of spiked running shoes pays off, but perhaps it's best to 'not try this at home!'

"As I handed over my visa debit card and paid for the $19.99 Adidas running spikes my inner monologue had only one line for me: 'You are an alpine climbing genius!' Light is right..."

Welcome to the website of the Oread Mountaineering Club, the friendliest and the most active outdoor club in the Derby area!

Based in the Peak District, the OMC is one of the longest established clubs in Derbyshire and its history of success can be put down to its buoyant culture of enthusiasm and activity.

Today we have around 180 members who participate at all levels in mountaineering, climbing and walking as well as loads of social events. All new members are welcome.

There’s a climbing meet every Wednesday – on grit or limestone in summer and on a climbing wall in winter.  We have groups at Wirksworth, Nottingham, Derby and a Sheffield climbing wall most Wednesdays. These  generally end up in the pub for a well-deserved beer afterwards.

During the winter on a Tuesday, there are regular slide nights and talks  (at the Royal Oak, Ockbrook) where you get the chance to meet up with other members  (and perhaps make arrangements for a trip to Scotland at the weekend if the conditions are in).

Members also frequently text or mail around spontaneously at any time of year to get together on other evenings or at weekends - offering great opportunities to get out climbing regularly .

Of course there are also numerous meets at weekends in locations all over the UK, both summer and winter, and an Alpine meet every year during the summer. As well as the  mountain areas in North Wales, The Lake District and Scotland, we often  have coastal meets to take in the delights of sea cliffs in such places as Cornwall and Pembrokeshire.

The Oread Mountaineering Club has two huts as well. Fancy a weekend climbing in Wales? Our climbing hut is in the back garden of Snowdon, and offers very comfortable accommodation for a few pounds a night to all members. The other hut is right in the heart of the Peak District on the Chatsworth Estate, walking distance from Gardom’s, Birchen and Chatsworth Edges.

And, as if that weren’t enough, there are also many opportunities to get together with other members for a ‘hot rock’ week in Spain, Kalymnos, Croatia, France.

Join the Oread Mountaineering Club, meet new friends, find new partners, get active regularly and have fun!  You will find details of forthcoming meets on the Meets List page. Come and meet us on one of the local meets.

We look forward to meeting you!
