September 11 & 12 Tan-yr-Wyddfa Gill Heys

For most, if not all of us, the hut and the surrounding area need no introduction. I will be hoping to climb on the high crags in big boots as following my recent trip to the Alps I have decided I need more practice of the 'traditional experience'!

It's my intention to have a communal meal on Saturday night and as a Lancashire lass I'm proposing to bring along a 'Lancashire hotpot'. I would appreciate volunteers for other dishes that would complement this one. See you there. Gill.

September W22 Curry Meet Simon Pape

I've booked the Matlock Bath Balti to mark the end of the summer. If you want to come along, do a last route in the evening sunshine and enjoy a Chicken Tikka Masala afterwards,

LETTER

Tracey and I would like to thank the Oread for the kind gift of a Tankard and Club Anniversary book in celebration of our marriage.

After being married for a while now I have learnt some important lessons, which I'd like to share. First, once a newly wed I thought it best to lay down some ground rules and establish who's boss, then do everything Tracey says. I have also learnt the difference between a wise man and a married man. A wise man gives in when he is wrong, a married man gives in when he is right.

You'll also be pleased to know that the tankard doesn't hurt as much as the frying pan!

Thanks

Mr and Mrs Weatherstone

July 10/11 Tan-Yr-Wyddfa BBQ

Another summer meet at T-Y-W: North Wales - I still love it! This year we had a BBQ - as we have done for three years in a row now. A total of 26 people attended the meet: 7 guests and 19 members. Pete & Ali were camping behind the hut. There were 9 couples including Chris & Gill, Nick & Pam, Richard & Dawn, Roger & Sharon, Tony & Dave!!! You can't be fussy at my age and it's a liberal society now! Dave Roscoe is an old school mate of mine and the guy who introduced me to climbing nearly forty years ago! He's a very good rock jock, but creaking at the knees now.

Starting with a personal perspective; on Saturday we did Angel Pavement. Its V diff or Hard Severe, depending on the book you use. It was wet when we started, and it's a serious route for either grade. The feel near the top is typical of a Cloggy or Cyrn Las route, with fine position and some loose rock. Many people went to Anglesey. Nick Pam & Derek Pike went to Wen Slab and did Dream, Wen and Concrete Chimney: what a great day! Richard and Simon did Gogarth. Others walked and scrambled across the four corners of Snowdonia.

Saturday night was spent with the BBQ, G&T's, Pimms, wine & beer. Merriment, conviviality were punctuated with drunkenness and some early ZZZZ's.

On Sunday members disappeared in all directions including Ogwen, but most went to Tremadog. Many climbed the standard VS's; Roger was climbing a tad harder - as he does! Thanks to everyone who came along and made this another enjoyable weekend in Wales. Here's to the next one. TH

St David's - August bank holiday

A small select group were present when we arrived on Wednesday evening in squally weather. Tea was provided and tents erected in time for the all-night blow-out and monsoon. The weather improved steadily throughout the holiday to give beautiful sunny days on Sunday and Monday with virtually no time lost due to rain or bad light.

The OMC gathered, as it does, to a number approximating 42, constituting a variety of nefarious itinerants who came and did and went.

The Hayes arrived sometime during Friday night/Saturday morning, having taken several hours to complete the last three hundred yards to the campsite. The story was that they had pulled onto the verge "to let someone pass", though it's difficult to see how one (or two) could bury a camper van without considerable vibration! We all marvelled at the crater they had created each time we drove past!

Much climbing, walking, cycling and drinking was completed, with as much enthusiasm. Armorican seems to have established itself as a classic within the Oread at long last, and the hotshots are working their way through the E-numbers on the Barcode supercrag. Meanwhile the local brews were sampled, the Ship provided a grandstand seat for the grand prix and kept him (Tony) quiet for an hour and Rosebush lived up to its reputation by serving up a grand local brew. Initiation Slabs saw a large team on Monday, many of whom were "initiated" by the first moves on each route which are all 5b and below sea level - a knee examination will reveal all!

The St Justinian lifeboat launch on Sunday excelled itself by setting fire to the cliff with one of their flares. This was followed by the local fire brigade attempting to put the fire out from above/below/the side - and failing miserably. It's probably still on fire!

And then we left, some for home, others for the deep south (proper rock with runners every two feet), and Radders hanging manfully to his tent performing aerobatics!

Thanks to all who came and added to the enjoyment. KG

Doug Cook

Sad to report that Doug Cook died on Saturday after being in hospital for several weeks. Doug joined the Oread in 1958 and so will be well remembered, especially by older members. I hope to include a longer appreciation in next month's newsletter.Ed
