FORTHCOMING EVENTS

July 21 (Sun) Gritstone Walk
July 27 - August 11 Alpine Meet
August 24 - 26 North Pembroke
September 7 - 8 Tan-Yr-Wyddfa
July 21(Sun) Gritstone Walk Jack Ashcroft

This will be a variation on the northern section of the 'Derbyshire Gritstone Way'. I will start from the Robin Hood at 8.30 am. The will be fairy varied - something akin to Jungle Arete, which varied Dead Tree Wall. However, the only difficult moves will be Longshaw Café, Yorkshire Bridge, and the Cheshire Cheese - all difficulties that can be turned! If you wish to attend please contact me

July 27 Aug11 Lauterbrunnen Mike Hayes

Well the disorganised chaos that typifies most of my alpine trips has at last (with the help of my brother) sorted itself out and a plan has been formed.

Camping Breithorn, just before the village of Stechelberg at the end of the Lauterbrunnen valley, will be our base for this years meet. They have set aside a field for us at the entrance to the campsite which I am told can be used if there is not enough space on the main site when we arrive. I am assured that it is nothing to do with keeping the noisy Brits under control - still it means the late nights spent drinking cheep red wine can continue undisturbed!

Travelling out on Friday afternoon we hope to arrive on Saturday 26th July for two weeks of sunshine climbing and socialising. At the moment I have 33 names on the list so we should once again have a good meet. The Moss's will be there the week before so if you are not on my list but fancy dropping in you are more than welcome.

August 24-26 Lochnagar Graham Weston

This meet, which was originally on the Meets List, has been CANCELLED in favour of the Pembroke meet below.

August 24-26. North Pembroke Keith Gregson

This popular annual meet is once again to be led by Keith. Camping will as usual be at Rhosson Ganol Farm, St Justinian's (GR 727252). Keith expects to be there early, at there will be many who will stay the full week. This is a very long-standing Oread tradition. There is much to do in the way of climbing and walking. The hard routes at Carreg y Barcud is particularly good (I'm told!). There will be BBQ's & much drinking as well. If you wish to attend, please contact Keith

September 7-8 Tan-yr-Wyddfa Family Meet Derek Pike

Derrek, the old workhorse will be running another meet to TYW. This time it's a family meet. However, Derek tells me that you do not need an armful of kids to be eligible to attend. If you wish to attend, please contact Derek

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR & SHORT NOTICES

Harry Pretty

Although many of you will already know, I have to report that Harry Pretty passed away on the afternoon of 1st July. He had been suffering from cancer for some months. He was 77. His funeral took place at Derby Crematorium on 10th July, and was attended by many Oreads old and young. Harry was a founder Member of the Oread Club, and along with his wife Molly, has been an active and local member of the Club for the whole of its existence. Pete Janes, as a friend of Harry's for over 50 years, has agreed to provide a tribute to Harry, for the Newsletter soon. This will I am sure reflect Harry's contribution to the club over this long period, and no doubt provide a celebration of some of the more amusing moments in Harry's life. However, for the moment I would like to say, indeed state the obvious, that he will be very deeply missed indeed. I personally found him to be a strong but very warm and generous person, with whom it was very easy to joke and pass the time. He was forthright in his manner; willing to speak his mind, but more than willing to listen to the views of others. During the one year in which I shared Committee membership with him I was in no doubt of his skill as President; a position he held with enthusiasm, ease & comfort. He was a keen a prolific letter writer. We are all of course also aware of the enormous effort he put into the editorship of the 50th Anniversary Journal - providing the painting for the front cover as well as several of the articles included there. We owe him a considerable debt for this alone. I would like to be presumptuous enough, for the moment, to speak on behalf of the whole club, and offer our deepest sympathy to his wife and family foremost, but also to his most long-standing friends. He will be very deeply missed. I fear we will not see the like of him again. [Ed.]

The following was agreed at the Committee Meeting on 9th July:-

In respect of Harry Pretty's role as a founding member of the Oread Mountaineering Club, twice elected President and an active member for over 50 years in the club, the committee has agreed to donate a sum of money equal to £1.00 per member to The MacMillan Continuing Care Unit, in accordance with the wishes of the family.

The club may wish to commemorate Harry's unique place in our club in another way. Please discuss ideas with a committee member so that we can work toward a consensus. [The Committee]

Gordon Wright Recovering

Tony Smedley writes: Gordon Wright is recovering from preliminary surgery leading to a knee replacement. We wish him well and hope to see a return to the hill in the near future. '[Gordon's] achievements range from serious Alpine Routes to walking from Lands End to John O'Groates, and [he's] a steady HVS leader. He finds this problem extremely frustrating, it will be great if the surgery works I would love to take him climbing again'. I'm sure we all echo these sentiments - good luck Gordon.

Meets List 2003 (Repeat Notification)

The 2003 meets list is beginning to take shape. If you would like to lead a meet, please let me know soon where and when. I would prefer to have some discussion, if possible, before anyone books a hut so that I can prevent clashes. If you haven't thought of leading a meet next year, perhaps you should. Consider a place you know well that is not traditional for the Oread or a traditional meet that you have enjoyed in the past that you might wish to repeat as leader. Remember no meets, no club.

I'm sure you will all agree with me that after four years of organising the indoor meets it is time I stepped aside for someone else. So come on guys make it a bit easy for me. Rob Tresidder

Membership Application

At the last committee meeting on the 9th July Phil Canning was elected to full membership of the club. congratulations Phil>
