Mar 29 AGM (Details next month)
Places are going fast, but there are still some left - so the message is hurry up! Last weekend there were heaps of snow in the valley, a sharp frost and glorious sunshine, so the weather knows what it is expected to deliver, and just has to do it again and again and again.
For those who don't know the ropes, our base is the George Starkey Hut, warm and comfortable and located at the start of the track to Side Farm GR 394 162. We usually limber up at the White Lion on the Friday night (28th Feb).
First Tuesday of the month at 8 p.m. in The Royal Oak, Ockbrook.
Feb 4: To be advised. 'A happening'?
The talk on Corsica has had to be postponed until 4th March, because Tony will be out of the country in early February - sorry.
Mar 4: Walking and Climbing in Corsica. Keith Gregson & Tony Howard
Keith and Tony will talk about walking and rock climbing in Corsica, including a recent traverse of the GR20, and multi-pitch routes in the hills and near the coast on this unique island.
Sweet nothing!
I am arranging a Dartmoor meet and have booked accommodation for the nights of Friday 9th May to Wednesday 15th May inclusive. Our base is in a village on the edge of Dartmoor approximately 5 miles south of Tavistock. The area offers a wide range of interests. If you would like to join us, please contact me as soon as possible, when I will send you further details. Places are going fast, and I need deposits shortly. [I wish people would stop calling me 'Shortly'! Ed. ] Gill Keeling
My intention is to travel out on the evening of Thursday 17th April, and to return 10 days later on Sunday 27th April. Please let me know as soon as possible if you would like to come along. At the moment there appear to be about 6 of us. Because the island is difficult and slow to travel around, and the weather can be a lot worse in the better locations (Corti and Bavella) I am planning at present to camp. This worked very well last year. We moved about to avoid the bad weather. You will be able to get an insight of the climbing locations on Corsica by coming to the slide show at Ockbrook on Tuesday 4th March. I hope to see you there. Two guidebooks can be obtained from 'Outside' and other climbing shops: Guide d'escalade en Corse Vol 1: Massif de Bavella (Obviously only covers Bavella, & not the Corti area.) and · Arrampicante Sportive in Corsica (English version), which is just sport climbing. There are also lots of good travel and walking guides available, e.g. Rother, & Sunflower, (available from Cordee & bookshops) and of course Lonely Planet for general information.

Please note that Colin will be away skiing from Feb. 26th to March 9th, any hut bookings to Chuck Hooley.
This list is only correct at time of going to press. Members are advised to check availability with the hut booking secretary Colin Hobday before going to either hut. Note that hut booking dates refer to nights (e.g. Fri/Sat for a weekend), whereas meet dates refer to the days e.g. Sat/Sun).I am sorry to inform you rather belatedly that Ronni Langworthy passed away at the end of November last year. Ronni and her husband Les joined the Club in 1955, and were very active club members, mountaineers and outdoor enthusiasts for many years. This included sledging in Lapland walking in Norway and diving off the Australian Great Barrier Reef as well as many skiing trips in the company of other Oreads. They also made a major contribution to the establishment of our huts. Les made all the existing dining tables and chairs at TYW himself! Ronni was the Deputy Chief Librarian for Derbyshire C.C. while Les was an Engineer with the Boots Company. In their latter years they also did a lot of work for the Black Country Museum in Dudley, and Les rebuilt vintage motor bikes and steam locomotives. They both had a keen interest in marine biology, and it was following a diving trip a few years back that Les died. They may not have been known to many of the younger members of the club, but clearly they led a full and adventurous life, and will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by their companions of yesteryear.
Another Oread member, Malcolm Padley passed away on January 7th. The funeral was held on Friday 17th Jan. at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium, Sheffield. The relatives requested that there should be no flowers. Those who wish to make a donation should make it to the RNLI. Malcolm had been a member of the Oread since 1951 and had been a Peak Park Warden for many years. A full obituary is to follow in a later newsletter. At the January committee meeting it was decided that the club will make a donation of £25 to the RNLI in Malcolm's memory. Uschi Hobday / Ed.
Many of you will remember Dorothy Liddle, who was bar manager at the Rowing Club, where the Oread met for many years. Her daughter, has recently informed me that, sadly, Dorothy passed away on 1st November last year. Her husband Bernard has now moved into a residential nursing home, due to ill health. We wish him well.
There are several members who have still not paid their subs for 2003. These are now overdue. If you have not yet paid your annual subs to the club please do so now. The revised fees are as follows:
Please note that this does not include BMC Membership. Please make all cheques payable to Oread Mountaineerin Club
The meet to the Forest of Dean will be on 4/5 October and not on 6/7 September as previously indicated.
G Reynolds' Autumn Amble will be on 6/7 September and not on 4/5 October as previously scheduled. (These two have been swapped).
T Howard's T-Y-W meet, previously scheduled for 18/19 October has moved back a week & will now be on 25/26th October - still at TYW.
Are you made of the "right stuff"? I am still seeking leaders for the Heathy Lea meet in March, the Heathy Lea barbecue and the summer stroll both in June, the Forest of Dean and the Golden Oldies both in September.
We also need someone to take on this year's dinner. I've booked the venue (Royal Victoria Hotel, Llanberis). All you have to do is choose the menu and make sure I am sitting next to someone fascinating. It's as easy as that! Rob Tresidder Meets Sec.
I have had to re-arrange Keith Gregson's and Tony Howard's Corsica show to March (see separate notice) on account of a business engagement of Tony's. Nothing has been arranged for February. I expect there will be a happening - remember those? Rob Tresidder. Oread formerly known as the Indoor Meets Organiser
The club is still seeking a volunteer to organise the winter indoor meets programme. If you are interested in doing this please contact any member of the committee.
At the January Committee meeting, Roland Smith, Angela Pingram, Neil Weatherstone and Tracey Pritchard were accepted as full members of the club. Welcome to each of you.

The following is a transcript of an ACTUAL radio conversation in October 1995, between a US Navy ship off the coast of England, and some British authority. The transcript was released by the MoD on 10/10/95.

AMERICANS: this is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln: the second largest ship in the US Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers, and numerous support vessels. We have received one new submission this month - from Chiz & Reuben. This has been added to the list, and some of the more interesting trips are listed below. I will re-issue the full list from time to time.
Please ensure that material for the next newsletter reaches me before Thurs 20th February. I would like to hear from Mike Hayes (Scotland), Roy/Chris Eyre (Spring Stride) .
